This dataset contains figures on the number of registered crimes per month and per year. These are broken down by type of crime and by district and neighborhood. Attempts are also included. For some crimes (for example, murder/manslaughter), this results in a much higher number than only the number of completed crimes. The data per district and neighborhood are presented for all years according to the classification of January 1, 2024.
Since July 2018, it has no longer been possible to record multiple related offenses (concurrence) in a single registration. An example is a street robbery in which a firearm (weapon possession) is used. If multiple offenses occur in one registration, before July 2018 only the most serious offense was counted. As a result of this adjustment, an increase is visible for a number of offenses compared to 2018, mainly trespassing, special laws including money laundering, arms trade including possession of weapons, drug trafficking, public order offenses, and other integrity offenses including insult. The increase was especially visible in the last 6 months of 2018. On the total number of crimes, this adjustment has only a limited effect. For the whole of 2018, this causes an increase of approximately 1.0%.
Since April 30, 2020, it has been possible to report WhatsApp fraud (also known as 'friend in need' fraud) online. This was used extensively. In the months of May through December 2020, approximately 20,000 reports of WhatsApp fraud were made.
Reports concern registered crimes for which an official police report has been drawn up. Multiple reports may be made per crime. Online reporting is only possible for a selected number of offenses and only if there is no indication for investigation.
Police: Since 2013, the Netherlands has a nationally organized police organization. The police consists of ten regional units, the National Unit, and the Police Service Center in which all supporting departments are housed. The Chief of Police is responsible for the leadership of the police and is accountable to the Minister of Justice and Security, in accordance with Article 27 of the Police Act 2012.
Registered crimes: A registered crime is a crime recorded by the police in an official report of a complaint or in an ex officio report. Crimes are the offenses punishable under the Criminal Code and various special laws, including the Opium Act, the Road Traffic Act, and the Weapons and Ammunition Act.
The source of the publication is BVI (Basic Information Provision), the police's management information tool. A registration is counted as a crime where a report and/or victim and/or suspect is linked.
The number of registered crimes is not equal to the figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Reasons are different filtering, classification of crime categories, and the inclusion of crimes recorded by the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
